Budget balancing act in City of Phoenix, what to cut?

Posted: Updated:

Tough decisions are ahead for the city of Phoenix the city facing a 40 million dollar deficit and that means some cuts are going to be on the way.
Some city of Phoenix services that could be on the chopping block? police, fire, parks and recreation, libraries, senior centers, and streets.

Money? not enough of it. About a forty million dollar deficit for the city of Phoenix next year.
FOX 10 asked the acting Phoenix city manager, Ed Zuercher what happenEd and why 40 million dollars. "well I think the economy has not recovered as quickly as people had expected, particularly in job recovery so there is less income in the community being spent and that drives our revenues" said Zuercher.

That means at city hall they're going to have to do some juggling.

For the City of Phoenix it is kind of when it rains it pours kind of deal declining revenues and you have to balance the budget so something's got to give and that means services.

That doesn't sit well with some people we met at the Phoenix Public Library. They say they need it to go online to look for work.

"I do not have interview so to look for a job I need to use their Wi-Fi big inconvenience not long enough as it is" said Patti Carlisle of Phoenix.

The process of what to cut began Tuesday with a session at city council chambers laying out the problem. The acting city manager says, be patient.

"We are in about the third inning of nine inning game if we look at budget process like a Diamondbacks game" said Zuercher.

There will be six weeks of meetings. Then proposals by March 25th. Then time for public comment.
