The Heat and Warmth Fund to assist thousands in Mich. with utility bills

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) -

As metro Detroit braces for yet another round of dangerously cold temperatures, some people are concerned about heating their homes. Many families in Michigan are also behind on their utility bills.

The Heat and Warmth Fund (THAW) expects to assist people in 25,000 Michigan households this winter.

"The customers we serve are survivors. I mean these are people that are at any measure trying to protect their home and family," says THAW CEO Susan Sherer.

She says the first thing people need to do if they're facing tough times is get help early. Do not wait until you get a shutoff notice. Call your utility company as soon as possible to set up a payment plan or to get referred to an organization like THAW. Sherer says 1.2 million people across Michigan are eligible for assistance, and man will face trouble in the coming months

"In 30 days when bills come in $75 or $100 more, that is money a house on a very limited, tight income cannot afford," Sherer says.

And for those who can help please donate. Federal funding to Michigan has been cut by $150 million dollars over the last four years.

If you'd like to help out, the annual radiothon for THAW will take place Friday Feb. 7 from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. on WWJ. The goal is to raise $750,000 this year, and every dollar that's donated will be matched by DTE Energy.
