Local man survives 46-vehicle crash, rescues dog

MICHIGAN CITY, Indiana (WJBK) -

Calls and emails have been coming into the Fox 2 newsroom about a dog rescued from a deadly chain reaction crash in Indiana. Sadly, his owner is one of three people who died. A local man is working to find the dog a home. (He says no more calls are needed. Enough people have expressed interest in adopting Sparkie.)

There was wreckage as far as the eye could see Thursday on I-94 near Michigan City, Indiana. 46 cars, SUVs and semis collided during a sudden white out. Bob Sharpe of White Lake was in the pile up that killed a man from Chicago and a couple from Grand Rapids and left more than two dozen others injured. We spoke to Bob by phone.

"The accident scene was massive carnage," he told Fox 2. "I was the lucky one. I came to a stop behind a bunch of vehicles that were crashing in front of me, vehicles were passing me and crashing behind me and I didn't get touched."

When everything stopped, Bob and others got out and tried to help the injured. He had a mother and child sitting in his truck to keep warm when someone walked up with a black lab who was covered in snow. Sparkie survived the crash but it turns out his owner did not.

"I have been in contact with the family and they know I have the dog," Sharpe told Fox 2. "Their lawyer contacted me and asked if I could get the dog adopted, that basically they didn't want the dog to come back. I think it was just too traumatic to have the dog back."

Bob has been caring for Sparkie at his home. Since we first aired this story many Fox 2 viewers have stepped up to take the dog in. He says the 7-year-old survivor does not appear injured but does seem confused by his new surroundings.

"I don't think he knows what's going on," Sharpe said. "Strange house, strange people but he's been good."
