Good Samaritan meets victim he helped in car crash 2 years ago

Two years ago Marjie Harkema and Dave Skimin met on an icy road, but he never saw her face or knew her name. She had also only heard about the mysterious man who helped saved her life - until now.

Harkema was driving home from work on M-14 when she lost control on the icy road and crashed her car into an overpass.

She says, "I remember looking in my rearview and thinking, 'Oh man, if I just did that, somebody's going to hit me for sure. And I could see some of the other cars coming, and that's when I was like, I better run."

But just as she began to run, another driver hit her.

"She squished me between her car and mine, and took my right leg right off at the scene and my left leg was too damaged for them to fix it," she says.

Seeing all of this Skimin, of Farmington Hills, pulls over to help.

"He picked my leg that had been taken off at the scene, he picked it up off the freeway and put it on the side of the road with me," Harkema says, letting out a little chuckle. He also stayed with her until the ambulances came.

"She was face down, so I didn't even know what she looked like. I didn't want to roll her over in that state. ... Every couple months it would always pop in my mind, 'Oh, I wonder what happened to her.' ... I just assumed that I would never know," Skimin says.

Harkema survived the accident but lost both of her legs. She spent six months in the hospital and another year and a half in physical therapy.

Fast forward to earlier this week when Skimin stumbled upon the profile on a dating website of a woman that seemed oddly familiar.

"She mentioned having missing her legs from the knees down and that she was in an accident and someone hit her at about 70 miles an hour, and it was in January 2012. And I thought, 'Well, gee, that's an interesting coincidence,'" Skimin says.

Harkema says he asked her if the date of her accident was January 2, 2012 - which it was.

The two quickly made plans for the following day, and shared memories of their first encounter.

"I knew everything that happened up until they took her away. She knew everything else that happened after," Skimin says.

To them, this second-chance meeting was anything but chance.

"If there was ever proof of fate, this would certainly be an example," Skimin says.

So - the big question ...

When asked if the two are friends, or dating, Skimin says, "We're talking."
