Phoenix firefighters rescued a 25 year-old man from an apartment near 35th Avenue & Thunderbird Sunday afternoon. Flames and smoke filled the home when fire officials found the man inside unresponsive.
"Firefighters had to drag him out and bring him out to fresh air" said Captain Tony Mure.
Family members identified the man as Edgard Valenzuela he is one of two deaf adults living in the apartment, at the time of the fire he was all alone.
"We seen them with Edgard on the ground with a gentleman that lives in the apartment on the group, he's deaf so they didn't know he finally showed signs of being ok" said Darcia Haynie.
"The male was not responding appropriately so we don't know if he was under the influence we don't know if it was smoke inhalation or if he was under the influence but he has been transported to a local hospital" said Capt. Mure.
Valenzuela is expected to be ok, the apartment though is badly damaged.
"Right away the hallway to their room is all black and burnt it looked worse than expected" said Jesus Valenzuela.
Family now just thankful their loved one survived. "It could have been worse and I'm glad that they actually got to him on time because it could have been a lot worse" said Jesus Valenzuela.
