70 volunteers helping spruce up Cumberland Island

Posted: Updated:

CUMBERLAND ISLAND, Ga. (AP) - A group of more than 70 volunteers is spending the weekend helping to spruce up Cumberland Island.

The Georgia Conservancy says it worked with the National Park Service to organize the large volunteer effort during the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.

Working Friday through Sunday on the federally protected island off Georgia's southeastern corner, volunteers have set out to clean up beaches, do restoration work on historic structures and perform maintenance chores on 35 miles of trails. They've also fanned out to help restore five campgrounds on the island.

The Georgia Conservancy says the Cumberland Island trip is the first of 35 outings it plans to host in 2014.
