Ga. lawmakers weigh big change for Jekyll Island

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Georgia lawmakers are being asked to make a major change in the 43-year-old state law governing conservation on Jekyll Island.

The state park's managers and conservation groups agreed last year that a 1971 law limiting development on Jekyll Island to 35 percent of its land area should be changed because they couldn't agree on the total acreage. Identical bills introduced in the state House and Senate last week would specify a fixed maximum acreage for hotels, golf courses and other amenities.

The proposal would limit future development to 78 acres. Of that, 20 acres could go to commercial construction.

The Jekyll Island Authority supports the measure along with the Georgia Conservancy and the Initiative to Protect Jekyll Island. But there's some concern lawmakers could make changes that undermine the compromise.
