Treacherous ice leaves fisherman landlocked up north

Posted: Updated:

Some spots on Lake Mille Lacs have 2 feet of ice, but other areas are all slush, and this inconsistency is delaying the ice fishing season in parts of Minnesota.

The anticipation and expectations are always so high for ice fishing season on Lake Mille Lacs -- it's simply an iconic walleye lake with a lot of fish on it, but with the sun setting on this mid-January evening.

Every resort onMmille Lacs is losing money this year.

It's turned into another day of disappointment and lost profits for Hunter's Point Resort owner George Nitti.

"On a normal year, we would have 280 houses out there, right now there's about 150," Nitti said.

Parts of Lake Mille Lacs are still covered in tons of snow and there aren't enough pathways plowed to get the ice houses all set up leaving some tourists stuck on shore.

It's also being blamed on the slush or lack of consistent thick ice on many lakes in the area.

In the Twin Cities, there's excellent ice conditions. Yes, it's been extremely cold, but up north, the snow acted as an insulator.

Tour guide Tony Roach says the area got hammered with nearly 20 inches of snow in the past few weeks and it piled on top of only 8 inches of ice in some parts preventing a solid freeze.

Because of safety concerns, Roach says he's even had to turn some of his clients away.

"If you get stuck out here, there's no one to get you because there are no roads plowed," Roach said.

With only so many weekends left before the end of the ice fishing season, the race is on to clear paths out on the lake, but no guarantee the weather will cooperate.

"Hopefully in the next couple weeks we'll be full out there, but then we have 4 weeks left and it will be time to pull them off," Nitti said.
