Chicago marathon runners to be chosen by lottery system

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Runners who want to compete in the Chicago Marathon will have to compete in a lottery first.

Marathon officials announced Thursday that most of the race participants will be chosen by lottery.

There are a few exceptions, elite runners, and wheelchair and charity runners will be exempt from the lottery.

The marathon used a lottery to fill part of the field last year after the regular online registration system crashed.

Chicago has become one of the most popular marathons in the world.

The lottery starts March 5th.
