DETROIT (WJBK) -

A 4-year-old boy is dead after being shot in the chest Thursday afternoon, according to Detroit police. It happened as three children were playing inside their grandfather's home on Tuxedo Street when a 4-year-old girl discovered a gun.

"The 4-year-old found a weapon in the bedroom and shot the other 4-year-old," said Capt. Rodney Cox of the Detroit Police Department. The victim was the girl's cousin.

The boy was rushed to Henry Ford Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Cox says the death appears to be a "tragic accident." He advises, "Make sure your weapons are secure, that your children or no one else in the home can get access to the guns."

As of Thursday night no one had been taken into custody, but that could change depending on what happens when police forward the warrant request to the prosecutor's office.

Information regarding the owner of the weapon was not made available.

Neighbor Olivia Queensbury says the little boy was "fun to be around," and that he "was a good little boy."

Tuxedo Street is on Detroit's west side of the city, near W. Davison Street and the John C. Lodge Freeway.
