Flat Rock woman's stolen vehicle sits in tow lot for months, racks up thousands in fees

An 81-year-old Flat Rock woman recently learned her stolen vehicle had been recovered in Detroit, but that it had been sitting in a tow lot for nearly five months and racked up thousands of dollars in fees because neither police department notified her.

Yvonne Vogt's 1997 pink Plymouth Neon was stolen right from her parking spot in front of the Flat Rock Towers senior complex back in August. She filed a report and had to buy another car in the meantime on her fixed income. A family loan allowed her to get a new vehicle so she could get around, but she always hoped her car would be found.

Then, nearly five months had passed when she came home January 11 to find a note on her door from Flat Rock police, saying her car had been found in Detroit.  

But her excitement would soon fade as she found out Detroit police found her car last summer, just days after it was stolen. DPD alerted Flat Rock police and it was towed to Troy's Towing Inc. on Grinnell Avenue. But the Flat Rock Police Department admits to Fox 2 their officer missed it, but also blame Detroit police for not following up.

Vogt's car sat in the tow yard and racked up nearly $2,500 in fees.

"9 o'clock September 13th - they knew it! And never told me, so now I'm supposed to pay all of this!" she says.

Detroit police say they heard about what happened and worked with Troy's Towing to bring the fees down to $800, which Flat Rock finally agreed to pay. Detroit police also say they not only alerted Flat Rock the first time and they missed it, but immediately after Troy's Towing realized they still had the car and contacted Detroit police last month, DPD alerted Flat Rock again and they still didn't let Vogt know until January 11.

And although fees were negotiated to the original $240 charged for the towing the vehicle to the yard after it was stolen, Vogt says she still can't afford to get her car back.

"I don't have the money, I can't go get it! I want the Flat Rock Police Department to get my car. This is their my fault! I didn't do any of this," says Vogt.

A representative from Troy's Towing told Fox 2's Taryn Asher the company will work something out with Vogt so she can get her car back.
