Karate teacher charged with sexually assaulting 12-year-old student in Hazel Park

(WJBK) -

Glenn Norton, 48, of Detroit is accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old boy.

Hazel Park police say Norton was a friend of the boy's family and frequently took the child to the Koei Kan Karate-Do club on John R. Road where he was an instructor and the boy was a student. Police say that's where the child was violated.

"Obviously this is an extremely traumatic incident for any child or family to have to go through and, obviously, we take these crimes very seriously," says Hazel Park Police Chief Martin Barner. Barner says the abuse started in June of 2013 and lasted until December when the child finally told his parents who went straight to the police.

Now investigators want to know if any other children were assaulted. Police says Norton also worked at a local hospital as a pediatric ICU nurse and as a home health care nurse for disabled children.

"We have ruled out the home health care nurse for disabled children, that we're fairly confident that there are no other victims from that side. We're still looking into some of the other avenues," says Barner.

Norton is now jailed on a one million dollar bond.

Court records show years ago Norton was charged with first- and second-degree criminal sexual conduct, stemming from an incident that allegedly happened in 1995, but the charges against him were dismissed.

Police don't anticipate that happening this time around.

"Just because he's arrested and charged with six counts of this crime doesn't mean this investigation has stopped," Barner says.

The chief asks anyone with any additional information or any knowledge of any other incidents involving Norton to contact Hazel Park police right away.
