Former client considers suing George Cushingberry Jr.

Current Detroit City Council President Pro Tem George Cushingberry Jr. represented Charisse Carter's son and nephew on an assault case in 2009, and she says Cushingberry was a do-nothing lawyer, never spoke up during proceedings and missed court dates.

"His excuse was always, 'Oh, I'm in Lansing.' How are you in Lansing and I just saw you at club ... doing a fundraiser?" says Carter. Carter says it got worse during sentencing and that he gave her a false hope.

"'[They're] only [going to] get 18 months.' I go back in the courtroom my kids got 14 to 40," she says.

Now she's considering taking Cushingberry to court.

Fox 2's Randy Wimbley stopped by the City County building in downtown Detroit to talk with Cushingberry about the allegations and his other legal troubles, but a member of his staff told us he was not commenting.

Carter isn't the only former client who was less than pleased with Cushingberry's legal services.

Store owner Paul Haddad says Cushingberry got him kicked out of the state WIC and food stamp program.

The drama has been unfolding ever since Cushingberry took office a few weeks ago.

"When I [saw] that he was City Council, I said 'Oh my God, they have no idea what they just did,'" says Carter.

Cushingberry first made news last week when it was discovered he was ticketed and released after an open alcoholic beverage container and marijuana were discovered inside his vehicle during a traffic stop on January 7, 2014. Cushingberry admits a strong smell of marijuana was present, but he attributes it to the second passenger in the vehicle who has a medical marijuana card. He also says an empty rum bottle was from an old party.

Cushingberry, who is black, believes he was a victim of racial profiling when police stopped him. Police Chief James Craig says one of the officers was black. Craig has ordered an internal investigation of the actions of a police supervisor who released Cushingberry, who was issued a ticket for failing to use a turn signal. The city's inspector general is also investigating Cushingberry's conduct.
