New report shows crime down in Memphis

Memphis police released new crime statistics Saturday.

The report shows crime was down in 2013, compared to 2012.

When it came to homicides, there was a 7.9 percent reduction. There was also a drop in reported forcible rape cases of 16.9 percent. Aggravated Assaults were down in 2013 by 5.9 percent.

The report also shows burglaries were down by 5.3 percent. Motor vehicles were down by 8.7 percent.

Overall, there was a 4.5 percent dropped in crimes in the city of Memphis. There were 48,604 crimes reported in 2013. There were 50,917 crimes reported in 2012.

MPD credits the Community Outreach Program (COP), Blue CRUSH, Precinct realignment and the movement of General Investigation Bureaus back to the precincts as the reason for the success in reducing crime.
