MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Coming on the heels of a national security breach over the holiday season, Target said Friday it will close eight stores nationwide, including one in Memphis, by May 2014.

Target is citing low sales and performance in the closure of its store on Winchester in Southeast Memphis.

Release from Target:

After careful consideration of each location's financial performance, Target also announced today that it plans to close eight U.S. stores on May 3, 2014.

The stores affected by this announcement are located in: West Dundee, Ill.; Las Vegas, Nev.; North Las Vegas, Nev.; Duluth, GA; Memphis, Tenn.; Orange Park, Fla.; Middletown, Ohio; and Trotwood, Ohio. Eligible team members at these stores will be offered an opportunity to transfer to a similar position at a nearby Target location.

The Target store on Winchester is one of the anchor tenants of a shopping center, and the entire area.

"I'm very disappointed to hear that. I'm very disappointed to hear they're leaving the community."

"It's not going to be very convenient, that's for sure, if they close this one down."

"I'm more of a Target fan than a Walmart fan, so any Target that closes I don't really like."

The news comes the same day Target announced holiday sales were much lower than projected, and the data breach is worse than originally thought. Target said more than 70 million customers had their personal information compromised. That's up from an earlier estimate of 40 million.

But Target said the closure of its Winchester store is unrelated to the massive data breach. The store's closure was selected because of its long term performance.

"It's one of the better stores we've got on this side of town and now we're losing it."

"It makes me just sad because there is so much dilapidation further down Winchester. I would hate to see this building become vacant. Hopefully it won't be vacant for long."
