SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (FOX13) -

Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite said the city is donating $5,200 in gift cards bought with taxpayer money to a local charity.

The money is a result of the state's investigation of former Mayor Greg Davis.

The Mississippi State Auditor's office showed receipts where Davis spent thousands of dollars at the Mesquite Chop House on Getwell Road, running up huge bar bills with excessive tips.

"Well, our decision was to donate the gift cards to the Northwest Community Foundation, because basically we felt like it's time to finally complete everything to tie up loose ends to the previous spending controversy," Mayor Musselwhite said.

Musselwhite added the former Board of Aldermen had approved the purchase of the 52 gift cards, purchased at a value of $100 each for former Mayor Davis to use to promote the city by taking business guests to the Mesquite Chop House.

"It's not a knock on Mayor Davis, and it's not a knock on the Chop House," Mayor Musselwhite said. "The Chop House is a fine restaurant. We just felt like it was important to tie up the loose ends and get rid of the cards."

Mayor Musselwhite also said the city had considered returning the cards to the Mesquite Chop House, but the restaurant has a no return policy on gift cards.

According to the mayor, the State limits what the city can do with the cards, so Southaven had no choice but to donate them to charity.
