Parents Upset About School Heating Issue

Posted: Updated:

Despite the cold temperatures, many people still had to go to work and many kids still had to go to school, but as FOX 29's Thalia Perez reports some parents weren't very happy about it!

It wasn't a typical school day at Eleanor C. Emlen Elementary, in East Mt Airy today. Michelle Abraham said her 5-year-old son Brian  and other students in his class were bundled in coats to stay warm.

"I knew there was no heat. His teacher told me. That's why I made sure to pick him up early", Abraham said. "Kids are supposed to be able to concentrate, and learn. You can't really learn if there's no heat for them to be comfortable," she added.

Some parents however, said they weren't told there was problem with the heat. "If she would've told me there was no heat, I would gotten her earlier",  Doris Wallace said about her daughter.

Bethune Elementary School had to shut down today because of heating trouble. Edison High School was closed because of flood and water damage, caused by a water main break, which happened last Friday.

Fernando Gallard, Spokesman for the Philadelphia School District, tells FOX 29 News that schools in Philadelphia close during cold weather only if there aren't enough resources to handle the weather event.

For school Crossing Guard, Patricia Montana, braving the cold wasn't easy.

"I was sort of hoping, maybe the schools would be closed," Montana said.
