FOX 32 meets Ricky Castro, the man behind `Chiberia`

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Ricky Castro is a meteorologist, not a neologist, or one who creates new words.

So the 29-year-old forecaster at the National Weather service never expected to reinvent the Chicago lexicon.

The inspiration came Saturday morning as Castro was driving to work at the National Weather Service office in Romeoville, trying to think of a clever way to convey the seriousness.

Clever it was as the term "Chiberia" has now gone viral, with almost every Chicagoan, and some elsewhere, using the term to describe the arctic temperatures that have hammered the Midwest area this week.

Chiberia isn't the only creative word making the rounds online.

People on Twitter have also come up these funny hashtags to describe our cold weather:

Wind-chillinois, IL-aska, and our favorite: Antarc-ditka.
