Video: Fire At Gas Station After Driver Hits Pump

Posted: Updated:

WALPOLE, Mass. – Police in Walpole, Massachusetts say the driver of a car pulled into a gas station for fuel, and instead hit a station attendant and sparked a fire in the pump.

The incident happened Monday at the 1A Auto Center on Main Street. Surveillance video shows driver, 83-year-old Ed Grace, driving into the attendant as he finishes fueling an SUV.

"I pulled in to get gas. There was one car ahead of me. He pulled up and I went to go ahead. I tried to stop. My foot hit the gas pedal," Grace said.

The impact threw the attendant about 30 feet, knocks over the gas pump and sparks a fire. The SUV speeds away to avoid the fire.

Police said the attendant was taken to Norwood Hospital with significant injuries but is expected to recover. The driver of the car was unharmed.

"I just feel so bad. It was a total, total accident," Grace said.

He says he's considering giving up his driver's license for good. "I don't know. I may. I mean I'm just shook up today. I'm totally shook up. I'm still upset," Grace.

The gas attendant was taken to the hospital and in expected to make a full recovery. Although Grace hasn't been charged, police did impound his car as they investigate the crash.
