SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. (FOX13) -

It's one of the coldest days we've seen in a long time. And if you were lucky enough to get your vehicle started Monday morning in the 13-degree weather and get to where ever it was you were going with no problems, it was a pretty good day.

But not everyone was so lucky.

"Antifreeze or batteries? They are about even," said Adrian Owens. "The same every time it gets this cold? They start coming in and they will keep coming all day."

To give you an idea of how the cold weather affects just about everything, even equipment at FOX13 News has been affected. We have a mast we put up to do live shots, a 40-foot mast. The only problem is it would not go up all the way so we could not get a live shot out.

So then we tried to put it down and it will not go down all the way. For safety reasons if the mast is not all the way down the vehicle will not move. We are stuck because our mast if frozen.

Down the street Christian Brothers Automotive was busy fixing other problems caused by the cold.

"They show up with radiator problems, water pump problems, broken hoses, things like that," said Mike Holland. "Batteries go bad as well. When they are weak they will really take them out so we get them going in for new batteries and get their heat working."

Speaking of heat, your vehicle's coolant is very important in cold weather, important that it does not freeze.

"You really need to check that cause it if you adding water you can freeze the block and crack it," Holland said. "Any place will check that for you that's real simple but I would have that checked today before it gets any colder."

Or you could end up putting one foot in front of another, saying over and over, "Why did I not check the antifreeze and my battery?"
