CTA Purple Line service suspended, other trains delayed

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

CTA Purple Line service is resuming after Monday's frigid weather shut it down for about an hour and caused delays on multiple other train lines during the morning commute.

Purple Line service was suspended about 6 a.m. due to mechanical problems with a train near the Howard station, CTA spokesman Steve Mayberry said.

As of about 7 a.m., service was resuming with delays, according to the CTA.

A shuttle bus is operating between Howard and Central to accommodate Purple Line riders, and Mayberry also recommended the No. 201 Central/Ridge bus as an alternative for Purple Line riders.

Limited shuttle bus service is also available between Linden and Howard, and additional shuttles are running from Davis to Howard, according to the CTA.

Trains throughout the CTA system are operating with average delays of 10 to 15 minutes, Mayberry said.

Purple, Blue, Red, Brown, Orange and Green Line trains are all operating with delays, Mayberry said.

Yellow Line trains are operating with residual delays, and Mayberry said riders are encouraged to use the No. 97 Skokie bus as a possible alternative.

Buses 201 and 205 were being rerouted at Chicago and Howard for snow removal, Mayberry said.

While buses and trains are operating on a regular weekday service schedule, Mayberry said riders should allow some extra travel time because the extreme weather could continue to cause delays.

He said switching problems were the most common issue associated with the cold weather, and estimated that average delays could range from 10 to 15 minutes.
