MEMPHIS, Tenn. -

Shelby County Office of Preparedness and other county departments are on alert for the dangerously cold temps in the Mid-South. The Office of Preparedness is offering a few safety tips to help you be better prepared.  Check out these tips listed below.

Safety Tips:

  • Bring pets indoors
  • Dress warmly and wear layers of clothes
  • Have plenty of blankets should power go out
  •  Don't use charcoal indoors, fumes can be deadly
  •  Keep water lines dripping, insulate outside water faucets
  •  Keep emergency generators outside to ensure deadly vapors are vented

Vehicle Check List:

  • Full tank of gas
  • Antifreeze level
  • Windshield wipers
  • Emergency kit with first aid materials, bottles of water, and snack foods
  • Coat, hat, gloves and comfortable shoes in case your vehicle gets stranded
