MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -

When it comes to driving during extreme weather, most of us would probably choose to stay home. However, when that's not exactly possible, you might want to make sure your car has been winterized.

"It would be antifreeze, wipers, fluids, and breaks," said Melissa Padron, manager at EVSA Mechanics on the 37-hundred block of Summer Avenue.

EVSA Mechanics says there are some key things you should check before you hit the winter roads. In addition to the basics like an oil change and fluids, you also need to check things like tire pressure and making sure all your lights are working.

"It's important because safety is first, and if your car is working properly, if anything happens, then you are ready," said Padron.

The wrong tire pressure can make driving on ice even more dangerous, so why take the chance. Gloria Shields isn't taking any chances and got her car winterized months ago." I got it all checked out, oil change, breaks, tires, and I am just ready for the winter, "said Shields.

EVSA Mechanics says it's also a good idea to have an emergency kit in your trunk with extra warm clothes, a flashlight and some snacks in the event of an emergency.

Other drivers we spoke with say they're not worried about freezing temps at all." The way that it feels right now, not at all, in Memphis, if it's icy one minute, it will probably be warm again by mid afternoon, "said David Grimsley.

And if that's not the case, you might want to prep for another blast of cold that's likely right around the corner since the official start of winter here in Memphis was just two weeks ago.
