JFK Airport reopens

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Heavy snow and blustery conditions forced the Port Authority of NY and NJ to temporarily suspend flights at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Friday morning.

The suspension began at 6:12 a.m. and was initially expected to last until 8:30 a.m. The airport reopened one runway at 10:12 a.m. Residual delays were extensive.

Crews continued to work to get the airport's three other runways back in operation.

The airport terminals remained open during the flight suspensions.

Thousands of flights were canceled across the country due to a storm that dumped nearly a foot of snow in some parts of the tristate region.

More than 190 flights were canceled at JFK alone as of 6 a.m.

Travelers were advised to call their airline before heading to the airport.

LaGuardia, Newark Liberty International, Stewart International, Atlantic City International and Teterboro airports remained open.

Newark airport reported 285 cancellations and LaGuardia reported 271 cancellations.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
