Shooting victim walks into McDonald's asking for help

Posted: Updated:

Authorities say a teenage boy who sought help for a gunshot wound to his leg in the town of Surprise actually shot himself.

According to police, the juvenile walked into a McDonald's restaurant on Thursday near 150th Avenue and Greenway stating he'd been shot and asked for help.

At first, detectives were investigating whether this was a random or drive-by shooting, but as it turns out, the shooting was not random -- police say the teen accidentally shot himself while putting a handgun in his waistband.

The teen suffered a gunshot wound to his thigh and the injuries are not life-threatening.  He was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Authorities say the shooting did not take place at the restaurant.

They say the boy originally gave police a false story about how he was shot, but admitted he lied to avoid arrest.

The name of the teen hasn't been released.
Police say the incident remains under investigation and that no criminal charges have been filed.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
