Winter storm drops fresh snow on SE Mich., makes for slow commute

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

A multi-day storm dropped several inches of snow on parts of southeast Michigan, causing a slow commute, spinouts and numerous school closings.

Snowfall began Tuesday and continued Thursday morning with reports of six-plus inches of accumulation in Monroe, Detroit and Riverview.

Nearly 60 schools canceled class and dozens of snow emergencies were declared in communities throughout the area.

AAA spokeswoman Nancy Cain says the auto club received 500 calls by midmorning Thursday from drivers dealing with spinouts, cars in ditches and dead batteries. AAA Michigan helped 3,000 residents on New Year's Day.

The National Weather Service says a Winter Weather Advisory runs through 2 p.m. with additional accumulation still expected. Once the snow ends, Weather Authority Jessica Starr says frigid temperatures will move in with overnight wind chills dropping to -15 degrees.

The slow-moving system will make its way into the northeast Thursday as blizzard warnings are in effect for parts of New York.  Up to 14 inches of snow is forecast for the Boston area.

Hundreds of flights were canceled Wednesday into and out of Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, according to the aviation tracking website FlightAware.com. About 1,000 U.S. flights were canceled for Thursday, with O'Hare and New Jersey's Newark Liberty International most affected.
