NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Michael Bloomberg walked out if City Hall Tuesday evening for the last time as mayor of the city he led for three terms. He waved to dozens of staffers and onlookers who took photos, cheered, and clapped.

"New York City, thank you for giving me the honor & privilege of serving you for 12 years," his Twitter feed read.

Bloomberg, a Democrat-turned-Republican-turned-independent, reshaped the city in many ways, which will be debated for years to come.

The billionaire founder of financial data company Bloomberg L.P. said he will stay in the public eye with being active in philanthropy and political and social causes.

His term ends at midnight, when Democrat Bill de Blasio takes over.

"Thanks to the hard work and dedication of my staff and all city employees, we've made every day count for NYC," Bloomberg Tweeted. "Best of luck to the de Blasio administration. May the best days for our city be ahead of us."

De Blasio responded via Twitter: "Thank you, Mr. Mayor."

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
