Inspirational Young Girl Laid To Rest

Posted: Updated:

A West Reading girl who inspired thousands to sing her Christmas carols as a dying wish was laid to rest today.

Delaney Brown died of leukemia on Christmas morning, just five days after turning eight. Despite the weather, family, friends and even complete strangers packed the parking lot to say their final goodbyes to someone they call an inspiration.

"It's amazing that one little girl brought so many people together," said Deborah Barskey, Delaney's great aunt.

Dressed in Brown's favorite color pink, scores of people came to pay their last respects for the girl known as Laney.

Kelly Lint set up tables with messages of hope in honor of the eight-year-old. She plans to give the notes to Laney's parents.

"And our hope is that it brings them comfort to know their daughter's inspirational story has touched many of thousands across the nation," Lint said.

Mary Ann Green never met Laney, but followed her battle with AML leukemia on Facebook because she once had cancer. Green was one of the thousands who sang the child Christmas carols outside her home.

"And it touched my heart because here's an eight-year-old little girl that, she can't live her life because of cancer," she said. "Cancer has taken a lot of people's life, and it's sad."

Bobbie Weiger also began keeping up with Team Laney last summer. The brave girl makes her think of her own granddaughter of the same age.

"Even though she didn't know her personally, she just followed her. Like I said, you just can't describe it, what impact she had," Weiger said.

Lint says Laney's reach went far beyond the people she knew, leaving a valuable legacy at such a young age.

"She taught us all the true meaning of life and courage and to continue to be caring and compassionate to each other," she said.

Laney's family is asking all donations go to the Four Diamonds Fund to help the fight against childhood cancer. You can make a contribution in Laney's name to Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, PO Box 852, Hershey, PA 17033.
