A bitter sweet Christmas for Staten Island Sandy victims

After Sandy After Sandy

It was a bitter sweet Christmas for a number of families across the Ocean Breeze section of Staten Island an area that was devastated by Superstorm Sandy

Linda Steiger, a local resident who was hit hard by Sandy says Christmas is just not the same.

Steiger owns one of the 129 homes in Ocean Breeze that the state is offering to buyout.

In November, Governor Cuomo made the buyout announcement in order to create coastal buffer zones that will help protect nearby communities from the impact of extreme weather...

The only problem is for some of these families, this could be the last Christmas they will spend in a neighborhood that they've grown to love

“We don't know if we're going or if we're staying, that is a question we can't answer,” one local said.

But for residents Ronald and Samantha Foster and their 8 kids, they know exactly what they're going to do.

They are going to accept the state's buy out offer of their property and move on

“I hate the buyout,” Samantha said. “Breaks my heart.”

There are some residents that have put up ‘we are staying!’ signs showing their love for their homes.

The question is how many other homes in the neighborhood will actually be around next Christmas?

But, if you can believe it, there's something else this 4-year-old is even more excited about: Times Square is going gold. The chairman of the Times Square Advertising Coalition announced the crossroads of the world is going to light up in gold to raise awareness for pediatric cancer research.
