Your cards are vulnerable anywhere, not just Target

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Merry Christmas, you may have been hacked. That's what millions of Target customers are now learning. If you're feeling relieved because you didn't shop at Target, well I've got some bad news for you because experts say, it could happen again involving other stores.

Data security expert Arik Hesseldahl says hacking is made easy in part because U.S. cards rely on easy-to-copy magnetic strips, technology that won't be changing anytime soon.

Three class action lawsuits have now been filed against Target because 40 million credit and debit card accounts of Target shoppers were possibly hacked.

If you think your card was compromised, contact the credit bureaus and disable your credit from being accessed and ask for w fraud alert. Above all, get all new cards.

Target isn't saying how the breach occurred. Lawmakers are now asking the federal government to investigate. Shoppers say they too are worried it could happen again and again.

Experts say that especially around this holiday season be wary of what's called a secondary attack: You may get phone calls at home asking for more personal information. Remember to never give it to anyone.
