LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) -

The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department is responding to criticism over its handling of wintry weather that left many roads and highways impassable in the state.

Agency director Scott Bennett says the department's work was "unacceptable in some areas" after the early December storm that brought snow, sleet and ice to much of the state. Bennett says that although highway employees worked around-the-clock, many roads in the state were unsafe for too long after the storm.

Bennett says the agency will work to improve its response to wintry weather. But he says Arkansas will never have the same resources as northern states that regularly see snow and ice.

He says the highway department recently adopted new methods, including pre-treating roads and bridges with beet juice as a salt additive.
