EAST MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

December is the season to be jolly, and most of us are. Going about our business, getting ready for the holidays.
Lots of shopping.

But then you hear about 85-year-old optometrist Dr. Burton Bodan, who was still going to work every day at an East Memphis eyewear Gallery.

After leaving work the evening of Dec. 12, Dr. Bodan went shopping and then traveled home to the gated community on Benrich Cove North. Police say when he got out of his car, the optometrist was attacked in his garage by two suspects.

The assailants left with several of his credit cards and $300 in cash.

Police aren't saying if Dr. Bodan was specifically targeted, but even living in a gated community may not give you full protection. No matter where you are, pay close attention to what is going on around you.

"This time of year it's going to happen and it's going to happen more and more," said one person.

"When you are busy putting shopping bags into your vehicle you could very well be the target of a bad guy looking for an easy mark.

"You have to be careful when you go shopping," said another person. "I'm always aware whenever I get in my automobile, I'm looking just out of force of habit."

"It's the way of the world and what the time is right now. Around Christmas time everybody needs money and they are going to get it one way or the other."

Police always urge caution, especially this time of year, because it can happen to you.

Dr. Bodan remains hospitalized in The MED after the attack. Police are searching for two suspects. If you can assist you are urged to call CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH.
