MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

It's a break from MLGW during the holiday and beyond. Memphis Light, Gas and Water is turning on the holiday cheer by not turning off customers who are behind in their utility bill.

Starting December 15th, MLGW is giving customers a break on their utility bill. From December 15th until January 14th, they will not disconnect services for any of its customers. The catch is your unpaid balance has to be $399.99 or less.

But as the temperature drops, one thing many of us can count on is the lights will stay on, the water still flowing and most importantly the heat will keep coming, all thanks to MLGW's ‘Holiday Bill Break' every year.

"During this period of time we don't cut any customers off for non-payment, however their balance must be $399 or less, and they don't have to worry about being cut off," MLGW Director of Corporate Communications Gale Carson said.

It's helping to check off at least one less thing to worry about during the holidays.

"It's the holiday season, it's one of the coldest periods of the year and we just want to work with our customers," Carson said.

Even though customers will get a break for now, MLGW reps still recommend paying what you can as soon as you can to keep the bills from piling up.

"A lot of times after this, then they have another bill on top of it at the end of this period of time, then they'll have two months' bills," Carson said.

But at least for now, there's a little bit of hope during the holidays.

The holiday bill break runs along with MLGW's policy not to cut off utilities when the weather falls below freezing or 32 degrees. They also won't disconnect services for senior citizens over 60 from December to March.

If you're having trouble paying your bill, you can also apply for an extended payment plan or participate in MLGW's payment program to help you get back on track.
