'Santa-con' bar crawl draws hundreds of santas

Posted: Updated:

Santas shouting, Santas dancing, Santas drinking…

Groups of Santas were out on the streets yelling things like, "Bud Light, Bloody Marys, any beer they want to give me. Mimosa."

It’s the city-wide bar crawl event known as Santa-Con.

The FDNY cleared out a whole bunch of bars for not following fire code.

Managers of those bars described it as their biggest day of the year.

For his first Santa-Con, Alex Morganson ordered his first beverage at The Thirsty Scholar, before most Santas had even finished their breakfast.

Alex says he started at 8:30 AM.

He planned to continue with the beers into the early hours of the following morning.

Neighborhood backlash against Santa-Con has led police to ask bars in Hell's Kitchen not to participate this year.

Some obliged.

Others did not.

Manager Elly Noble said it was very calm and everyone was in the holiday spirit.

The East Village meanwhile was not calm.

The FDNY emptied bars it deemed ‘too full of Christmas spirit.’

And when he wasn't breaking fire code, Santa ordered shots, Santa smoked cigarettes and occasionally Santa received a talking to from the NYPD.

According to one patron, there was a man doing 20 cart wheels in the snow. “He was just flipping down the street, just going, going, going,” the patron said.

Presumably, those people had to go home at some point.

Local railroad agencies placed a 24 hour ban on alcohol onboard their trains until 12pm Sunday afternoon.

From coffee shops in Brooklyn to restaurants in Manhattan, we find speakeasies standing out by blending in. When people in Bushwick want a green machine juice blend they visit Leticia Castillo's Owl Juice Pub. But first they must find the owl. "We been doing fine without a sign," Castillo says.
