Track New York City's snow plows

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The salt spreaders and snow trucks are all out there plowing the snow but here is where New York City's snow fighting goes high-tech: the Department of Sanitation has unveiled an interactive GPS-based tracking system called "Plow NYC."

This grid tracks the location of the more than 1,700 plows and spreaders equipped with GPS devices working to clear the streets and roadways of the 5 boroughs.

The Plow NYC website allows city residents to type in their street address to see when a snow truck has been on their specific street in real time.

"They'll have 2 options: to either view their snow removal designation, which will tell them if they're primary secondary or tertiary or private street, or they can see when they were last serviced or if their street has been serviced," said Chief Shari Pardini of the Sanitation Department.

This radio room works in tandem with the satellite war room making sure that crews in the field and the staff command central are all on the same page.

"Any conditions that are found or any concerns that we have, we'll reach out to the nearest vehicle via radio and say make a pass on this street or make can you check a condition or mostly to communicate with the field officers," DOS's Edward Grayson said. "They have the eyes on the ground and then give us that feedback so that we know our response is appropriate."

The system is online now.
