Christmas Greetings: Gilbert family creates elaborate YouTube videos

Posted: Updated:
GILBERT, Ariz. -

By now, those of you who are planning on sending Christmas cards this year have sent them already -- or you're in the process.

But one Gilbert family has been planning and working on their latest Christmas salutation for months.

The Slade decided to forgo the normal paper cards a few years ago -- instead they sent a YouTube video message to family and friends.  Little did they know those videos would garner so much attention.

Now it's become a tradition -- trying to out-do themselves every year, while thousands of people log on to see their cards.

"We've never done a Christmas card and he was like, let's just do a little Christmas card for the family and I thought that was a good idea," said Whitney Slade.

That video card turned into an elaborate underwater production, starring the entire family.  It was immediately shared thousands of times.

"We thought it would go to about two to 300 people would see it and it kind of escalated from there.  It was fun, got a good response from it and everything," said Micah Slade.

Then in 2012, another hilarious Christmas card video of a full blown food fight.  But this year, the most outrageous video card yet.

Every year, these videos get more and more elaborate. They built an upside room right in their own backyard -- it measures about 12 by 12.

"This is a room we built and it's on a gimble that spins 360 degrees and the reason we did this is so we could have the affect of walking on the walls and walking on the ceiling and stuff like that," explained Micah.

The entire structure is complete with a vintage couch and a TV to outfit the retro look the family was going for.

"After we put it all together, it's fun to see how it worked out.  I'm always surprised every year that it works out," said Whitney.

The family says beyond the attention that these video cards have garnered, it's more about spending quality time with family than anything else.

"What's most important to us is the memories we create with our kids," said Whitney.

Micah added, "That's what's really cool is that we've got this bond and we can enjoy these memories."

I asked if they were already working on ideas for next year's card.  They said yes, but weren't sharing any spoilers with us.
