Mega Millions winning numbers

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

There were two winning tickets sold for Tuesday's huge Mega Millions jackpot.  The tickets were sold in San Jose, Calif., and Atlanta, Ga.

The winning numbers from the Tuesday December 17, 2013 Mega Millions drawing were:  08 14 17 20 39 and Mega Ball: 07.

The jackpot had risen to at least $636 million as of Tuesday night because of brisk sales.

A jackpot winner would have 60 days from the date he or she claims the jackpot winning ticket to elect to receive the prize as a lump sum or annuity. The current cash (lump sum) value of the updated jackpot is $341.2 million before required tax withholdings. The annuity payment provides for an initial payment followed by 29 annual payments. Each annuity payment is 5 percent larger than the previous one.

The largest Mega Millions jackpot to date was the March 30, 2012, drawing for $656 million. Three players from Illinois, Maryland and Kansas split the jackpot.

A major game revamp to Mega Millions in October, aimed at growing bigger jackpots in a shorter amount of time, decreased the odds of a person winning the top prize to about 1 in 259 million.

It was previously about 1 in 176 million, nearly the same odds as winning the Powerball jackpot.

Still, the cost for a chance at winning millions with Mega Millions is just $1. This is the second-largest Mega Millions jackpot ever.

Paula Otto, executive director of the Virginia Lottery and Mega Millions' lead director, says it's expected that between 65 and 75 percent of the 259 million possible number combinations were in play Tuesday.
