There is no bigger award you can get in the music industry than a Grammy and one choir teacher from Horizon High School in Scottsdale was nominated for one by her students -- for the first ever Music Educator award.
Katherine Kouns taught at Horizon before recently moving to Indiana. She was one of 30,000 applicants from across the United States. Now she's in the top 10 and couldn't be more thrilled and honored.
In this choir room, flanked with awards and trophies, lessons beyond just music are taught.
"It's really hard to describe her because she's more than just a music teacher, she's a life teacher," said Courtney Evans, a former student.
Another former student, Corey Johnson, added "She brings out the best in me and everyone that she meets and everyone she's around."
These students are talking about Kouns -- their former choir instructor. She left a huge impact on her students -- so much so -- they nominated her for the first ever music Educator Grammy Award.
"I just didn't think anything of it and then all of a sudden and then the cut process started happening and started dwindling us down," said Kouns. "It feels like I'm having this outer body experience like watching this happen."
"I heard about the Grammy nomination and I just knew she had to get nominated to be recognized," said Carly Cunningham, a former student.
"Not only does she deserve it, but it's tailor made for her," said Chelly Maniuszko, a parent.
Choir Director Allison Guilford says, "She's the reason I'm doing this, absolutely."
Guilford is the new choir director and Kouns' former student.
"When people ask her what she teaches, her response is students because she doesn't just teach music, she teaches kids to be great people," she said.
Her students couldn't be happier for her -- and can't wait to see what happens.
Her students have taken to Twitter to get the attention of the Grammy's using her name as a hashtag.
She is expected to find out if she is the lucky winner by the end of January. If she wins, she will get to go to the Grammy's to accept her award.
We'll keep you posted how she does.
