Church Treasurer Accused Of Stealing From Church

Posted: Updated:
HATFIELD, Pa. -

A Montgomery County Church Treasurer is under arrest. She's accused of stealing nearly $80,000 from her church. Parishioners and the pastor are stunned.

Pastor Glenn from the Emmanuel Evangelical Congregational Church is still in shock by his treasurer who decided to take nearly $80,000 from the church.

"I'd like to ask why but I don't know if words would be enough," Glenn said.

Pastor Glenn says it's hard to digest that his trusted treasurer Stephanie Klig is the person police say milked their bank accounts of nearly $80,000.

Authorities say Klig's scam continued for more than a year as she made dozens of cash withdraws draining the account and leaving only $36.

"She made 64 withdrawals directly from the bank. The other part of the theft is she stole $20,000 to buy gift cards that were meant for the church's fundraising programs" Jeremy Abidiwan Lupo Asst said.

Church Officials say Klig provided falsified monthly treasure reports indicating a balance of over $100,000, but when notices arrived of unpaid bills they became suspicious.

"My heart sank. I was like what is going on here," Jim Finnemayer Church Board President said.

Pastor Glenn says donations helped them get back on track, but it hurt knowing Klig was the only suspect. She was a trusted, active member of the church who in addition to her volunteer position as treasurer would teach, attend social events and occasionally sing in the choir

"It's hard to fathom. This is essentially everything we had and more" Pastor Glenn said.

According to the church, she has no immediate family in Pennsylvania and lives alone. Kligge was arraigned and did not post her $25,000 bail. Her next court date is Dec 24.
