SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Shelby County Schools cafeteria employee Wanda Long said she has seen her vacation and sick leave compensations cut, other employees lose their jobs and filled with temp workers being paid even less than her approximate $10,000 annually.

To say she is outraged about a Shelby County Commission committee recommending $20,000 raises for school board members would be an understatement.

"I don't see how an individual would look at getting 20 more thousand dollars, then you got peoples who's not working, you got teachers that's been laid off," she said, "And custodial workers that's laid off that other people came in from different companies and take the job from them."

The recommended $20,000 salary increases come in the same year when 2,000 SCS employees were laid off to help cope with a multi-million dollar budget shortfall.

"Just two weeks ago this school board announced that they've lost $48 million of equipment," said School Board Member David Pickler, "We've asked teacher to take payments, we cut salaries, we've cut benefits, we've had to lay off employees."

Long said this past July, her school held a meeting to inform them that their vacation, sick leave and holiday compensation would be taken away. She had many questions including, she said, "Why were we getting our vacation checks taken from us? And we wasn't going to receive any benefits anymore for sick leave?"

For at least one board member, he plans to refuse the raise. Pickler said, "If I get it, I will donate every penny of it to the Shelby County Schools Education Foundation. I don't want to have anything to do with this funding."

Commissioner Mike Ritz said during Wednesday's committee meeting he wants to rezone the school district so there are nine members. If this and the $20,000 board member raises pass in the commission, that would mean a grand total of $180,000 spent on raises for the school board members.
