2 Arizona bus companies forced to shut down

PHOENIX -

The federal government cracking down on passenger bus lines.

On Thursday, investigators announced they are shutting down 52 companies across the U.S. -- two of them are from here in Arizona: River City Shuttle in Lake Havasu and Autobuses Rayon Incorporated in Phoenix.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration ordered the companies to stop operations.

The address on file for Autobuses Rayon Inc. led us to a Phoenix apartment complex near 21st Avenue and Indian School Road.

It's not clear if their American and foreign operations were run out of this small space, but a federal order to stop service on November 16th states:

"Autobuses Rayon Inc. is a  cover name and USDOT transportation number used by a variety of motor carriers and commercial motor vehicle owners to operate commercial motor vehicles transporting passengers in the United States."

According to the feds, at least three different carriers were operating under the company's name.

The report goes on to say that Autobuses Rayon failed to hold drivers to federal safety standards.

River City Shuttle, based in Lake Havasu, was shut down for reasons that remain unclear.  In May, Aloha Airport Express announced they were taking over River City and would now transport passengers on new Mercedes buses.

Federal investigators also discovered serious safety defects on all Autobus Rayon vehicles.  The report says that during the inspection of their five buses, investigators found 68 violations.
