SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Some Shelby County Commissioners think Shelby County Schools Board members need bigger paychecks.

"We ought to indicate to everybody in the community our support for the school system in trying to get good people to run next year to serve on the school board," said Commissioner Mike Ritz.

In a 4-3 vote, a commission committee approved a recommended salary increase for county school board members, who currently receive $4,200 per year. If this passed at an upcoming full commission vote, the seven school board members would receive $20,000 increases.

"If we can attract some good quality candidates with a few more dollars, I say do it," said Commissioner Henri Brooks, "If we do not raise the salaries, particularly those who are public servants in the education system, we are not going to enhance the educational outcomes of our children."

But in a year of municipal lawsuit legal fees, audits and millions of dollars in budget shortfalls, some commissioners did not think the timing was appropriate.

"It just sends a horrible message to the teachers that lost their jobs, to the custodial workers that had to get their jobs cut because there's not enough money, yet we're going to give seven to nine board members $20,000 more per year?," Commissioner Thomas said. "That would actually help put someone in the schools."

"Let me do the math here: We spent $5 million on lawyer fees, $48.4 million missing of equipment," added Commissioner Terry Roland, "What you're doing is breaking the county. If they don't want the job, don't run for it. If they're running for the pay, don't run for it."

The increased $25,000 a year school board member salaries would go into effect next September if passed by the full commission.

Ritz said they've needed school board salary increases for years, but he wanted to wait until the 23-member board was downsized. Thomas said school board members did not ask for the raises.
