Marietta civility policy aims to improve parents' conduct

Posted: Updated:
MARIETTA, Ga. -

Marietta school leaders are trying to cut back on bad behavior among parents. A new civility policy seeks to improve the conduct of parents.

If approved, the policy would ban profane and abusive language in person, on the phone or in e-mails to teachers or administrators. Physical threats and intimidation would also be prohibited. Repeated or significant disruptions could result in the involvement of law enforcement.

Marietta Schools Associate Superintendent Dayton Hibbs said that the proposal was drafted in response to a number of incidents in recent years in which parents became unruly with staff members.

"No one has the right to come to a school and disrupt the learning environment," said Hibbs. "If a person is doing that, then they can be asked to immediately leave."

The school board is expected to vote on the proposal in January. The policy also applies to staff members, Hibbs said.
