Police: Driver arrested in Long Island hit-and-run

Posted: Updated:

BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island driver is under arrest after police said he hit and killed a pedestrian and drove off.

The 47-year-old driver was awaiting arraignment Sunday after being arrested on a charge of leaving the scene of a fatal crash. No telephone number for him could be found, and it's not immediately clear whether he has a lawyer.

Suffolk County police say victim Santos Amaya was walking across Islip (EYE'-slip) Avenue in Brentwood around 10 p.m. Saturday when a car ran him down and then took off.

The 31-year-old Amaya was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Meanwhile, police found the damaged car and arrested the driver a few hours later. He lives in Brentwood.
