Illinois could bar drivers from using Google Glass

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Google's new computerized glasses haven't even gone on sale yet, but an Illinois lawmaker wants to make it illegal for people to use the devices while driving.

State Sen. Ira Silverstein has filed legislation to try to keep the technology known as Google Glass from taking drivers' attention off the road.

The Chicago Democrat tells the Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers that "it's just another way people will be distracted."

Google Glass features a small video display on a lens in front of the user's right eye. The device is built into frames that look like eyeglasses.

Users can search the Internet, make phone calls and check email.

Legislators in Delaware, New Jersey and West Virginia have also introduced bills that would specifically ban driving with Google Glass.
