TEMPE, Ariz. -

Police searched a Tempe middle school after a student allegedly showed two other students a gun in his backpack. The "gun" has been determined to be an airsoft gun.

Tempe Police Sgt. Michael Pooley says just before school started,a student at Fees College Preparatory Middle School showed two female students a gun in his backpack.

He allegedly told them it was a toy, but the girls weren't comfortable with it and reported what happened to school officials.

20 to 30 officers searched about 1,000 backpacks and eventually found one with an airsoft gun in one of the last rooms they searched.

According to police, two boys are involved; one apparently passed the airsoft gun off to the other.

They could face charges, even though they are minors.

The school, located near McClintock Drive and Baseline Road, was placed on lockdown for a short time while patrol officers searched.

Kids will be sent home with a letter for their parents that reads:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This letter is to inform you of a situation that unfolded on our campus today. I want to make sure you have accurate information and ask for your assistance.
This morning, two Fees College Prep students believe that they saw a weapon in another student's backpack. The student with the backpack told the two students that what they saw was a toy, but the two students felt it was still important to notify staff. Administrators immediately began to investigate and contacted Tempe Police, who ordered a lockdown. The investigation involved officers searching every backpack to ensure student safety. During the search, a BB gun was located.
This is a reminder of how serious we take issues like this when it comes to your student's safety. Please talk with your child about not bringing any item to school that doesn't contribute to the learning process.
As we continue to raise achievement and expectations at Fees College Preparatory Middle School, we will also continue to communicate with you openly and honestly. Thank you for your continued support of our safe, orderly, and caring environment.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call me at 480-897-6063.
