GLENDALE, Ariz. -

A family is looking for answers after a 50-year-old man was killed while at work.

The victim, identified as Douglas Elliot, was a maintenance worker at an apartment complex near 67th Avenue and Bethany Home Road.

The people responsible for shooting Elliot still haven't been caught.

Not only was Elliot killed just before the holidays, he died exactly three weeks before his grandson was expected to be born.

They put up the tree and turned on the lights, but the Elliot family has to celebrate Christmas without the dad, grandpa, and husband they lost.

"I've gotta stay strong for my family and try.. what my dad would want me to do and make sure everyone is taken care of.. I'm the oldest son and now I gotta fill his shoes too," said Doug Elliot, Jr.

The victim's son and his wife Elizabeth say their three children couldn't wait to visit their grandpa every weekend.

"We had to talk to them that night and let them know that papa's not there anymore that he's in Heaven and that they can still talk to him.. it's just so hard," said Elizabeth.

The family tells us that Doug's life revolved around his grandchildren and he couldn't wait to meet the newest baby -- a boy named Carson, who is expected to be born to his son Brandon and wife Ashley on New Year's Eve.

"We just feel like we've been cheated.. that our son doesn't get to know him at all because someone took his life.. it doesn't make sense at all," said Ashley.

The victim's sons say their 50-year-old father was passionate about his job as a maintenance manager at the Glendale Commons where he was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon. They don't believe he knew the shooters.

"He's not confrontational -- if anything he'd probably be like, 'Hey what's going on.. you okay?' who knows," said Brandon.

UPDATE: "On 12-6-13 Glendale Police Detectives were continuing their investigation into the homicide of Douglas Elliott from 12-3-13 in the 6500 block of W. Bethany Home Rd.  Detectives began to look into a subject by the name of Theodore Montgomery, an 18 year old male, as potentially being involved in this incident.  Working with the Phoenix Police Department, Montgomery was located in Phoenix with 2 other subjects and was detained and brought in for questioning.  That questioning led to the identification of other subjects involved in this incident that are still outstanding.  Following the interview Montgomery, and another male juvenile were booked on charges related to the homicide from Tuesday at 6500 W. Bethany Home Rd.," stated Sgt. Jay O'Neill.
