Freeze warning for the valley: People prep for chilly temperatures

Posted: Updated:

Time to get out those jackets and sweaters and crank up the heat in your home.  The valley is under a winter weather alert and a freeze warning was in effect for Thursday night and will be again on Friday night.

The freeze warnings go into affect at night and continue into the following morning at 10 a.m.

And it's not just your body that you have to keep warm.  A lot of people around the valley were forced to cover their plants to keep them from being frozen over -- that's because overnight temperatures are expected to dip into the 30s.

A beautiful crescent moon was shining over cold people and covered plants.

Doug Kounder made sure to prepare his plants for plummeting temperatures after losing three trees to last year's freezing temperatures.

"I lost some stuff even though it was covered," he said.

Andrea Hardwick added, "I have a sweater under.. I have my gloves and my scarf."

Christy Lopez is bundled up for the cold.  "I just have my scarf on, my boots and a big jacket."

Families bundled up while couples cuddled.

Is the coffee helping?

"Yes, it is.  I'm headed to Starbucks now," replied Hardwick.

One of the coldest jobs in the valley is driving a pedicab.  Luckily Adam Newton brought a blanket.

"A lot of guys who don't have blankets lose rides.. kind of like in the summer -- the sun gets really hot on the seat."

Right now, the hot summer sun doesn't sound too bad.

"I like hot weather better," said Lopez.

The suburbs of the greater Phoenix area are expected to see temperatures in the 20s and 30s.
