Detroit police officer's widow waiting for word on impact of bankruptcy

"We lost so many officers this year; they have so many kids. How do you tell those kids 'I'm sorry you lost your dad, but now your mom's going to have to go away too because she has to work to now take care of you?'"

Diane Philpot lost her husband, a Detroit police officer, nearly 20 years ago. He was killed in the line of duty. Now she fears she could lose his pension, too. She says it isn't much, but the $24,000 is enough to sustain her and her daughter.

She and her daughter are also losing their health insurance. The city is offering families like hers 125 dollars a month, but considering her premium could be $5,000 a year that monthly stipend is barely a drop in the bucket.

Now she and so many other widows fear that income could be gone now that Detroit is eligible for bankruptcy.

Judge Rhodes has made it clear pensions aren't granted special protection in federal bankruptcy court, despite Michigan's constitution. Emergency manager Kevyn Orr hasn't said exactly how pensions will be cut but he says he will consider the people in every decision he makes. D

Detroit's pensions funds have vowed to file appeals.
