Durbin says tornado cleanup 'amazing'

Posted: Updated:

GIFFORD, Ill. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin visited the eastern Illinois community of Gifford to get a firsthand look at tornado cleanup efforts.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports that the Chicago Democrat says the Gifford residents are "pulling together to get this community back."

Gifford has about 1,000 residents. It was one of the communities slammed by about two dozen tornadoes on Nov. 17. The storms are blamed for seven deaths.

A boil order for Gifford's water could be lifted by this weekend. The building housing the village's water equipment was destroyed and is now housed under a tent with two heat heaters.

During Tuesday's visit, Durbin said there'd been "an amazing outpouring of effort" to help Illinois residents cleanup from the storms.
